人間の多様性」の表現のためにこのシステムの導入を提案する草案は、2015年にGoogleマーク・デービスAppleのPeter Edbergによって提出された[6]

オンライン・コメンテーターはユニコード・コンソーシアムのこの提案について、良く言えば現代アメリカの文化戦争におけるポリティカル・コレクトネスの正しさを虚しいジェスチャーとして反映したものであり、悪く言えばまだ適切に実装されていない非西洋の文字の利用者に対する「侮辱」であるとして批判している[7]

以下の表に、人を表す絵文字と5個の修飾子との全ての組み合わせを示す。システムに適切なフォントがインストールされ、レンダリングソフトウェアが修飾子を処理できるプラットフォームでは、これらの文字を表示できる。絵文字修飾子をサポートしないプラットフォームでは、ボックスとして表示されることがある。
