概要

Windows NTは元来サーバ向けに開発されたOSである。Windows NT 3.5からはワークステーション版が登場し、Windows 2000 Professional以降はコンシューマも利用できるOSとして開発されたが、サーバ版も引き続き存続した。

Whistler（Windows XP）からはそれまでWindows 9x系の利用が推奨されたコンシューマー向けに普及が図られた一方、サーバ版はIntel Itanium/Itanium2専用のWindows Advanced Server/Datacenter Server, Limited Editionを経て、XPに遅れる形でWindows Server 2003として分離することになった。

長期サービスチャネルおよび過去の商品

Windows Server は長期サービスチャネルに該当し、リリース日から10年間サポートされ、サポート期間は、5年間のメインストリームサポートと、さらに5年間の延長サポートに分かれる[3]。

Windows Server 2008からはServer Core、Windows Server 2016からはNano Serverと呼ばれるGUIのないエディションが存在する[4][5]。

Windows Serverのバージョンの一部には、特別なエディションがある。たとえば、Windows Home Server (2003 R2, 2008 R2)、Windows HPC Serverが挙げられる。

また、Windows Server Essentials（以前のWindows Small Business Server）やWindows Essential Business Serverなど、Windows Serverの機能制限版とMicrosoft Servers製品とのソフトウェアバンドル版も存在する[17][18][19]。

半期チャネル

Windows Server, version 1709 より1年に2回リリースする半期チャネルを新設した[3]。サポート期間はリリース日から18ヶ月である[3]。マイクロソフトは、このチャネルの下で、Windows Serverを年間2回リリースするとしている。リリースにはGUIデスクトップ環境のないServer CoreとNano Serverも含まれる[21][22]。

このチャネルのオペレーティングシステムは、ソフトウェアアシュアランス、Azure Marketplace、Visual Studioサブスクリプションなどのサブスクリプションサービスの一部として利用できる[22]。
