マイケル・ベントン
マイケル・ジェームズ・ベントン(Michael James Benton、1956年4月8日[1] - )は、イギリスの古生物学者。ブリストル大学理学部地球科学科の古脊椎動物学教授[2][3]。主に三畳紀の爬虫類の進化に関する論文を発表しているが、絶滅事変や化石記録中の動物相の変化も研究している[4][5]。

2010年12月にはマイケル・ベントンの名誉を称えてリンコサウルス目のベントニクスが命名された[6]。
経歴
アバディーン大学を卒業後[1]、1981年にニューカッスル大学大学院で博士号を取得[7][8]。1996年にはブリストル大学で古生物学の修士(理学)課程を設立し、以来300人を超える学生を輩出している[9]。ベントンは50人を超える博士課程学生を監督し[9]、日本の古生物学者真鍋真もその中の1人である[10]。
研究
ベントンの研究は古生物学や大進化の調査であり[11][12]、彼の研究は様々な学術誌で発表されている[13][14][15][16]。ベントンは生命の歴史を理解するための基礎研究を行う古生物学者であり、特に時代を通しての生物多様性の変化を対象としている[9]。現生生物および化石生物から得られたデータを統合して系統樹を作成し、どのようにして主要なグループが発生して時代を通して多様化したかを突き止めることを目標としている[9]。このアプローチにより、生命史の内外でそれを動かしてきた要因の関連する役割とは何か、多様性が飽和することがあるのか、大量絶滅の重要性とは何か、どのように主要な系統群が放散したか、といったメジャーな疑問の理解は急進的に変わってきている[9]。キーテーマは2億5000万年前に起きた顕生代最大の大量絶滅であるペルム紀末の大量絶滅事変で、そのような出来事からどのように生命が回復できたのかを調査している[9]。
2010年には中華人民共和国遼寧省産の恐竜シノサウロプテリクスの化石の細胞中からユーメラノソームとフェオメラノソームという2種類の色素メラノソームを発見したと報告した。これは恐竜の色彩や模様を再現するある程度の手がかりとなった[17][18]。
出演
ベントンはドキュメンタリー作品にも出演している。例えば、BBCで2002年12月5日に放送された番組 The Day The Earth Nearly Died では、ペルム紀末の大量絶滅の謎を研究する科学者が出演し、ベントンも当時の環境や生物多様性、ゴルゴノプス亜目のディノゴルゴンの形態などを解説した[19]。

ベントンは大学生用の数多くの古生物学の教科書(例: Vertebrae Paleontology)や恐竜をテーマとした子供向けの本の著者でもある[9][20]。
